Crosland, Thomas William Hodgson

Crosland, Thomas William Hodgson
(1865-1924)
Born in Leeds, an anti-Scottish Tory and monarchist, he was a Fleet Street reviewer, critic, and editor for The Outlook, The Academy, and the Penny Illustrated Paper. He launched a bitter attack on Oscar Wilde's "De Profundis" (written about his experience in Reading Jail for homosexuality [1896-1897]). Himself a sufferer from diabetes and heart problems, Crosland's poems reveal a keen feeling for disadvantaged. His major poetical publications: The Absentminded Mule, and Other Occasional Verses, 1899. The Finer Spirit, and Other Poems, 1900. Outlook Odes, 1902. Sonnets, 1912. War Poems by X, 1916. The Collected Poems of T.W.H. Crosland, 1917. Last Poems, 1928. Antarctic. Some of his poems: "Charing Cross," "Killed," "Marching On," "Recipe," "Slain," "The 'Student,'" "The Baby in the Ward," "The Eagle: The Good Conceit," "The Rhyme of the Beast," "The White Feather Legion," "Titanic."
